Design note 1

Therapeutic studies and prevention studies: different goals

Some studies test whether a product helps people who already have a condition. Others test whether it can lower the chance of getting one. The designs ask different questions.

The short version

  1. Therapeutic studies enroll people who already have the condition of interest.
  2. Prevention studies enroll people who do not.
  3. Endpoints and visit schedules usually differ.

Who is enrolled

Read the inclusion criteria. They state whether the condition must already be present.

What success looks like

A therapeutic study may track symptoms or disease scores. A prevention study may track new cases over time.

Why mixing them confuses readers

A headline that ignores the difference can make a result sound broader than it is.
