Design note 3

Open-label extensions after a blinded study

After a blinded study ends, some participants are offered continued access in an extension where everyone knows what they receive. It is a different kind of data.

The short version

  1. Extensions often focus on longer-term safety and tolerability.
  2. They are usually not blinded.
  3. Results answer different questions than the main trial.

Why they exist

Researchers and participants may want longer follow-up once the main question is answered.

What changes

Blinding may end, and some people switch from comparison products to the study product.

How to read them

Look for how many people continued and why others stopped.

Not a second main trial

Extensions complement the main study; they do not replace it.
